Maya's Discussion Post 2/5/14

Whenever someone brings up the topic of space in general, it is a bittersweet experience for me. On one hand, it is incredible to talk about on a scientific level; it’s pretty awesome that there is so much left of our universe for us to learn about (so that we can boldly go where no one has gone before ☺︎). On the other, it kind of derails you because you realize just how tiny you are. In a way, it is humbling.

We talked about how the introduction of Darwinian theory simply created another wall for humans. Even though we are constantly discovering new things, there is only a finite amount that the information we possess currently can explain. Where the explanations end is where the wall begins. I think it is very possible that in time, another wall will be created... or the original wall will just be moved out a little further. Some new theory about x will come out and people will be skeptical at first, but they will ultimately come to embrace and accept it like they have in the past. When we discussed that because our universe is infinite so is knowledge, it proves Socrates’ quote, “All I know is that I know nothing”; that is kind of a big pill to swallow.
