Maya's Discussion Post 2/18/2014

I think everyone has seen someone or experienced themselves making a choice that has gone against their best interests. When we were talking about the smoking example, Ryan brought up that this is usually has to do with influence from peers. While I agree, I think at a certain point it is all up to the individual; all of these extraneous factors such as peer pressure only go so far. Your peers are not around you constantly. So, when an individual opts to smoke or do whatever other disadvantageous thing again, I believe that it is usually through their own will. Aside from this, people also mature (or at least most do to a certain degree). You are not going to be the impressionable twelve year old for all your life (hopefully). Conscious, intelligent adults who have the capacity to overcome things such as peer pressure continue on. No matter how difficult it may be to actually quit, they still know that multiple ways to stop whatever habit they’ve picked up exist and are readily available.
