Kaylee Monday Post

In today’s discussion, a person’s quest for validation continues. Dostoyevsky states that at times he would be positively glad of being slapped in the face, as it is an answer to his cry for attention and validation. This reminded me of when little kids throws temper tantrums to gain the attention of people around them, even though they know that they are disrupting the peace of the situation. As humans, we constantly seek approval and attention from our peers. And if we don’t get the attention we want, we go to great lengths to gain it. We see this later on in the story when the man is at dinner.
In addition we discussed how one’s level of consciousness has the power to hinder their ability to function as a “normal” human being. Dostoyevsky provides a perfect example of a man who is completely immobilized. The Stranger also had qualities such as the man in NFTU. His level of clarity was so great that he was doomed in society, unable to live normally- essentially joining the underground man.
