Maya's Discussion Post 2/20/2014

Today’s discussion brought about a very compelling paradox; our most “advantageous advantage”, also known as free will, is what can ultimately lead to our demise. When you think about it, though, we have put this positive connotation behind the concept of free will. When we look at the Steve Jobs’s of the world, we see that as free will. He took some initiative and elected to go against the conventions presented to him to innovate and follow his passions. We pin that as free will. But when you kill 20 people who just wanted to watch the new Batman movie in peace, you’re a lunatic who doesn’t grasp or appreciate the gift of free will. We can all sit here and talk about whatever chemical imbalances that guy might have and probably had. At the end of the day though, it’s safe to say he chose to commit that atrocity. He woke up, said, “I’m gonna do this today”, planned it out, and went and did it. He hadn’t been living in the woods or anything; I guarantee this man clearly knew in his mind that just the act of bringing an automatic weapon into a civilian area would be enough to get him into a significant amount of trouble.
