Today, I had a major throwback to lower school; everyone knows that the best day in science class was when they rolled in the TV on the cart and the teacher whipped out the Bill Nye VHS tape. One particular point that Bill Nye made today in his thirty minute section was that we have to raise a scientifically literate youth so that they can produce new and innovative technologies. I completely agree; improving technology and funding scientific research will result in a better standard of living for all considering that Noah’s ark did not include the cure to HIV/AIDS, cancer, etc. What was even more interesting was that Bill Nye supported this claim by saying that it would keep the U.S. as a “super power”. Many of the heavily religious states are incredibly, almost radically, patriotic. Therefore, what Nye said in itself should be pretty enticing.
All this also had me think back to when Ken Ham said that secularists are “imposing their beliefs”. I’m not saying that atheists who are all in your face about it don’t exist, but Ham seems to be insinuating that creationists/religious people have not done so in the past. In fact, it seems to be that a lot of religious people have a tendency to want to shove their beliefs down your throat (this may be an extreme example, but take a look at the Westboro Baptist Church).
