2/18/13 Isa's Post

One of the points brought up in today's discussion was the idea, negated by the Underground man,  that believing in religion caused people to do more good deeds. I actually believe the opposite. Because religion is so powerful to some believers, I think the temptation to go against good judgment is even higher because they have the security net of religion to "save" them if they were to venture too far. Bad choices can always be reconciled by a higher belief in God, which is why one sees just as many faithful devotees going to jail or committing hate crimes. It's almost worse to have such a cushion because it just allows more curiosity and desire to grow.
The question of advantages was also brought up. What I got from it was the question as to how can man create so many "right" advantages such as peace, prosperity etc. and forget to factor in the unpredictability of human nature? It is impossible to create a system by which man operates because man himself does not know how he operates. The power of free will, and curiosity and desires is stronger than any scientific data that says otherwise.
