Ciara's Thursday Reaction
Today's conversation about man's most advantageous advantage really got me thinking, and it opened up my mind to the core of Dostoyevsky's argument. Without man's instinct to break away from the norm and make irrational decisions, we would never move forward. We would be stuck in this deadlock situation without any decisions being made. In other words, if every man was like Dostoyevsky, our world would be at a standstill; now I truly understand why Dostoyevsky's 'intelligence' is a curse. It all comes down to science in the end. Referring to Darwin's theory of evolution, our ability to move forward is driven by our ability to adapt. One animal of a species finds itself with a different characteristic due to a gene mutation, but this chance mutation ends up leaving the animal better suited to its environment. This mutation begins proliferating and eventually becomes a dominant gene, and the entire species acquires this favorable mutation over time. Sure, this physical mutation is experienced by humans and men alike, but the conscious mental mutation and adaption is what Dostoyevsky refers to as our most advantageous advantage. It is what makes us unique. It is what makes us the dominant species of this earth.
