Today in class we discussed the importance of free will in a society dependent on institutions that might limit this freedom. We discussed how free will is guided by the laws of nature and is essentially what makes us human. Man is in constant conflict with desire and reason; reason being what society deems as correct (“living a textbook way of life”, like Maya said), and desire being a choice that comes from within you. The goal of free will is essentially to achieve a better quality of life.
We talked about the most advantageous advantage being consciousness or free will, however, our disadvantage is when reason and choice is calculated my mathematics or science. While striving to maintain a better quality of life, we tend to stray away from the disadvantages, even if it is a better option, simply because they impose on our free will. People who have acted upon their own free will include Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, who both dropped out of institutions to essentially change the world. However, I believe these two cases are the exceptions.
It is in our nature to prove that we have control. This control is what gives us a sense of existence or validation as we have mentioned in previous discussions. However, free will comes with a price if we chose to abuse it.
