Today's discussion,of "Notes from the Underground" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, was very interesting. One topic brought up that I had never thought about before was the one concerning people's tendency (or lack thereof) to listen. Apparently, people do not generally listen to each other that often unless it's for their own benefit. I have been doing this my whole life and I have never been conscious of it. I listen to teachers so that I can learn and do well in their respective classes. When I talk to my friends, they talk to me and I spend most of the duration of that time thinking about what my response will be.
Of course, when I read this particular section, I thought the narrator was completely crazy and cynical. I now realize that the reason I thought this was because I was in denial over how human beings really behave. The narrator seems crazy until you put him in perspective and realize that he exemplifies human nature.
