The fact that the narrator gets pleasure from destroying
what is sublime and beautiful was an interesting character choice. The deeper
you read into Notes from the Underground the more correlations you can make
between yourself and the underground man. I can see how I would want to destroy
the sublime and beautiful just because I can. For example, People derive
pleasure from having control over nature, which in essence is the pinnacle of
the sublime and beautiful. The class’s discussions to the generalizations
presented to us was interesting as it really showed how people’s pride and
self-interest heavily influence their perception of the world. The depth of the
book really astonishes as the insight concerning human psychology the reader
can draw from a short amount of paragraphs is incredible. I look forward to
delving deeper into the book as I am sure many of Dostoevsky’s deeper ideas
went right over my head.
