Sharon's Fifth Reaction

Tonight’s reading was definitely an interesting one. Upon waking up to Liza, a prostitute, the narrator converses with her in a manner that reveals quite a bit about himself. By attempting to strike up awkward conversation, it is clear that he is uncomfortable in the situation. Claiming to have experienced and seen things he never did, the narrator will do anything to appear smart, once again demonstrating insecurity. His speech to Liza was rather mean-spirited and clearly another attempt to establish his superiority over someone he sees as the lowest of the low by influencing her thoughts. It also seems to me that his speech displayed some of the qualities he thought was important in life, but could never achieve; he values love and family greatly. In the end though, he still feels that such items elude him because he is too intellectual or ‘conscious’ to have them.
