This reading is going to require a lot more effort and thinking than anything else we’ve been assigned all year. I spent 40 minutes reading and annotating the first 5 pages and I became frustrated quickly when I did not understand everything I was reading. I think the narrator is a depressed due to the intensity of his own thoughts. He seems to be very educated and intelligent which further frustrated him because as we learned in the beginning of the year “The more you know the more you know you don’t know.” Everything he has come to know and accept in life is a blatant contradiction and he still cannot manage to figure out who he is. What stood out to me the most was, “to be too conscious is an illness.” The truth drives us crazy and all the distortions that build up can make one go insane, much like the narrator seems to be.
