Kaylee NFTU Day 1
Shap was not kidding when he mentioned that Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s Notes
From the Underground was dense. After reading the first 10 pages or so of
the book I can say I have never read any other literary work like this one. As
soon as it begins, Dostoyevsky sets the tone of the book with blunt darkness – “I
am a sick man….”. The narrator is definitely a sick man both physically and
mentally. Although he comes off as a know-it-all, I enjoy reading along with
this character as he conveys his ideas. The conversational style of the novel
is very intriguing. Reading on, he touches on some stimulating topics and
questions, such as the norm of limited consciousness, revenge, the enjoyment in
pain and suffering, self-respect and more. So far the story is somewhat
confusing, however it questions the reader in a way I have never experienced
before, it is both dark and enlightening.
