In the most recent fifteen pages of
Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Notes From The
Underground, I have seen a different side of the narrator. Through an
interaction with a lover named Liza, both he and she discuss their views on
love and marriage. While not clear, I believe that the encounter with his
former classmates is a different memory entirely than the most recent
recollection. An interesting line I read was that Liza thought that the
narrator read “like a book.” Aside from the obvious irony, it seemed to bother
him. Personally, I found the narrative really. Liza shows the man a letter she
keeps to show she is not just a disgusting prostitute. Truthfully, I found the
entire encounter awkward and pathetic, feeling bad for Liza. All in all, I enjoyed
the last fifteen pages of the story most of all. It feels the most genuine and
shows real emotion from the narrator and Liza. I hope the last fifteen pages
are just as compelling.
