Raoul's Monday Reading.
In today's reading, I believe Dostoyevsky was inversely describing a social psychology concept that we discussed in the first lecture. The narrator of the story was talking to Liza, a lower minded women. The narrator continued to prejudge and analyze Liza's situation in life by using his labels and experience. However, the narrator failed to see with clarity at the situation. While guessing at Liza's past and judging her future, the narrator missed out on the opportunity to enjoy the time he had with someone who was willing to give him the confirmation of existence that he desired. Dostoyevsky's narrator, like our 18 year old AP english student at the beach, could not enjoy the moment because his mind was clouded with knowledge. I believe this is why Dostoyevsky created a lonely yet intelligent narrator. His intelligence did not allow him to enjoy life at a physical level because he was always preoccupied in his conscience. Which again goes back to Dostoyevsky's earlier arguments about man's conscience. But I am going to finish this post here in fear that I too have been rambling; however, I have been rambling (most likely) in the wrong direction.
