I have found the second part of this book quite relatable
especially when he talks of the people around him. When he says that he found
himself despising his coworkers but also thinking of them superior to himself
it got me thinking. The only reason we “despise” people is because we care
enough to despise him and the reason we care is that either they have done
something to us or make us feel threatened. In Dostoyevsky’s case, it is an
issue of feeling threatened and not acknowledged for his intelligence.
This issue was again
brought up when the officer put him in his place for the first time. I found this part relatable because I work
at a boutique and a common customer was being a b*tch the other day and she
asked me, “What was your name again?” This is a lady who knows me very well and
has called me multiple times regarding the clothing and the fact that she acted
like she didn’t know who I was was “unforgivable” as Dostoyevsky would say. It’s
almost as if we were competing for a place or to be validated. There is nothing
more threatening than being ignored or treated like you don’t exist.
