Natalies 4th Reaction
In Part Two of Notes From the Underground, the narrator places a large importance on social class and respect. When the narrator has altercations with the officer, the fact that he will not move out of his way really bothers the narrator. By not moving out of the way the officer is basically saying that the narrator means nothing to him, so much so that he does not even see him. To the officer the underground man means nothing to him, because he is of a higher class than him. The narrator's dreams represent the opposite of himself, and maybe an easier way of life. In a way his dreams represent the antithesis of his life. Rather than being an overly conscious man, in his dreams he is happy, elated and a man of action. I feel like deep down, and despite his constant thinking that he is "above" everyone, he would rather be this man of action than the man he is. Living your life without constantly over-thinking everything is a simpler task.
