Within
the first few paragraphs of Part II chapter 6, the narrator describes his
thoughts in an interesting way that I think most people have done before. Upon
realizing he has slept with a woman, he recollects his thoughts as if the night
prior occurred several years in the past. People have a tendency to imagine
events taking place a long time ago and relatively recent at the same moment. I
think this occurs most whenever I think about a school year, by the end of the
year, the first day of school seems as if it happened an eternity ago, but at
the same time, it feels as if the year went by in a second. I think Dostoyevsky
is trying to capture this phenomenon in the first parts of chapter 6. After
conversing the woman, the narrator realizes he has evoked emotion out of the
women that at first responded stoically. Furthermore, the narrator feels as if he
is above the women because he evoked emotion. I think this is a rather
relatable feeling; it is natural for a person to feel superior if they respond
rationally and collected rather than reacting hysterically, which is what I think
Dostoyevsky is describing.
