In the third
section of Notes from the Underground, the narrator takes the reader back to
when he was twenty-four. I was hoping to
learn a bit about why he was such a negative, dark older man, but he seemed to
be very similar in his youth. He was an isolationist,
and did not attempt to engage with his fellow workers or citizens. In fact, he despised most people he ran
into. But, he still had a bit more
desire to be a part of the world in his youth.
Even at one point he had a group of friends he would regularly socialize
with. HE also managed to stand up to a
self-absorbed police officer that wouldn’t treat any citizen equally, something
he wouldn’t dare do in his older age. Although
his courage fails him multiple times, he still manages to show the officer that
he isn’t below him. He receives a
beating for doing this, but he maintains his dignity. I hope to learn why this part of the narrator
has vanished completely from his personality.
