Isa's 4th Reaction
Dreams are often called the window into the soul. In this next portion of The Underground Man, the narrator's dreams are a clear indicator of his wants versus his reality. It seems that he craves nobility and adoration but has no interest in such in his real life. It's either perceived idea of weakness for such desires or he simple hasn't realized for himself that he struggles with his needs. Even his unannounced visit to his friend indicates a deeper level of loneliness and yearning for social interaction. This want for companionship obviously stems from his isolated and undoubtely lonely childhood. But like many, his less than ideal youth has compromised any chance at a "normal" or even healthy adulthood. His own mind seems to get int he way; he over thinks every emotion, decision etc. And this indecisiveness is very frustrating to read honestly.
